在大冰期内，不只是高纬度地区，连中纬度地区都有强烈的冰川效应。在大冰期之间的时间间隔，大概有几亿年时间，距离人类最近的大冰期，是发生在第四纪时期的大冰期，距离我们现在大概有100万年时间。对第四纪冰川的研究，是人类地质学的重点之一。

和现如今全球气候变暖的大趋势不同，不少科学家担心地球会进入下一个冰河世纪。目前主流的观点是，当太阳运行到靠近银河系中心的位置时，太阳光会变得格外虚弱，因而会形成地球上气温的骤降，也有人认为是银河系内部的密度不一致，当太阳进入星际物质密度较大的地区时，抵达地球的太阳辐射机会出现一段时间的减少期，进而形成大冰期。

无论哪种观点，太阳都跟地球的冰期密切相关。地球的板块构造运动，黄赤交角的变化，以及火山爆发带来的火山灰对太阳光的反射作用，都是一场大冰期形成的。

冰河时代末期是什么时候？

是于第四纪的更新世内发生的最近一次冰河时期。末次冰期约于7万年前开始，于1.15万年前完结。于这段期间，曾出现几次冰川的前进及消退，最盛期发生于约2.1万年前。一般而言，全球冷却及冰川前进的模式相似，但也有局部的分野，这使得很难以大洲来比较。
