I think that human life almost reads like a poem. It has its own rhythm and beat. It has cycles of growth and decay.

  It begins with innocent childhood, followed by embarrassing youth. Then it reaches manhood. At middle age, there is the slight easing of pressure. The whole process is just like the ripening of a fruit or the mellowing of a good wine. Then in the sunset of our life, and if we treat old age correctly, it is for us the age of peace and safety, leisure and contentment;
finally, life goes to sleep forever, never to wake up again.   人生始于纯真的童年,经过少年的青涩,然后走向成熟;

这一历程正如芳馥之果实,如醇美之佳酿;
英语短文再后来就是人生迟暮,若此时吾辈已经悟得老年真谛,并据此安排残年,那生活将安详而知足;

  One should be able to sense the beauty of this rhythm of life, to appreciate, as we do in a grand concert, its main theme, its strains of conflict and its final resolution.

  No one can say that a life with childhood, manhood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement;
duanwenw the day has its morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good that it is so. There is no good or bad in life, except what is good according to its own season. If we take this view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one can deny that human life can be lived like a poem.   人生有童年、少年和老年,谁也不能否认这是一种美好的安排;

One ought to remove even the bowl of nectar from the lips.

  Demand is the measure of value. Even with regard to bodily thirst it is a mark of good taste to slake but not to quench it. duanwenw Little and good is twice good. The second time es a great falling off. Surfeit of pleasure was ever dangerous and brings down the ill-will of the Highest Powers.

  The only way to please is to revive the appetite by the hunger that is left. If you must excite desire, better do it by the impatience of want than by the repletion of enjoyment. Happiness earned gives double joy.

  A single one of them is worth more than a multitude of mediocre ones.

  There was once a man who made all his belongings, duanwenw even his household utensils, as great as possible. How much more ought a great man see that the qualities of his soul are as great as possible.

In God all is eternal and infinite, so in a hero everything should be great and majestic, so that all his deeds, nay, all his words, should he pervaded by a transcendent majesty.

1 As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inexhaustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and an infallible warrant of success in times of uncertainty. Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the grave. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What'
s worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sapping our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization, Therefore, to stay mentally young, we have to take learning as a lifelong career.

2 In my opinion, the schoolwork now being assigned to high school students is too heavy. While it is true that students need to study, they need other things as well if they are to grow into healthy and well-rounded adults. High should be allowed more time for play. Plying is not wasting time, as some think. It gives them physical exercise, and also exercise their imagination. Which tends to be stifled by too much study. Finally, the pressure put on high school students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally. I do not advocate the elimination of schoolwork. I do think, however, that a reduction of the current heavy load would be beneficial to students and to the society as a whole.

3 Lost time is never found again. This is something which I learned very clearly last semester. I spent so much time fooling around that my grades began to suffer. I finally realized that something had to be done. It was time for a change. Now I have a new plan for using my time wisely. I have set my alarm clock ahead half an hour. This will give me a head start on the day. I have also decided to keep a log of what I do and when I do it. Looking back on what I’ve done will give me some ideas on how to reorganize my time.

最后我终于了解到我必须有所作为;

  短篇英语美文 篇4   However mean your life is, meet it and live it;
do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The faultfinder will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man'
s abode;
the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace. The town'
s poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any. May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town;
but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means. Which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.   Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends, Turn the old, return to them. Things do not change;
we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

  夕阳反射在济贫院的.窗上,像身在富户人家窗上一样光亮;

大多数人以为他们是超然的,不靠城镇来支援他们;

5 Greta always said, "
dear, keep walking in sunshine!"
no matter how terrible my day started, i always felt sunny walking home from greta’s house-even beneath the winter starlight.

  I arrived at greta’s house today just after sunset. an ambulance had stopped a few feet from her door, it’s red lights flashing. when i ran into the old house, greta recognized me right away.

  She smiled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. she was almost out of breath when she reached out and softly touched my arm. her last words to me were "
dear, keep walking in sunshine!"

6 Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being'
s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what'
s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

  An individual human existence should be like a river—small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.

  Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.We grow old by deserting our ideals.

  Years may wrinkle the skin,but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

  短篇英语美文 篇7   Youth   By Samuel Ullman   Youth is not a time of life;
itis a state of mind;
it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and suppleknees;
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of theemotions;
it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.   Youth means a temperamentalpredominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over thelove of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobodygrows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.   Yearsmay wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.   Whether 60 or 16, there is inevery human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’snext and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and myheart, there is a wireless station;
so long as it receives messages of beauty,hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you areyoung.   When your aerials are down, andyour spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, thenyou’ve grown old, even at 20;
but as long as your aerials are up, to catchwaves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.   译文:   青春   青春不是年华,而是心境;

  岁月悠悠,衰微只及肌肤;

  一旦天线下降,锐气便被冰雪覆盖,玩世不恭、自暴自弃油然而生,即使年方二十,实已垂垂老矣;

8 Ah, beautiful Paris. For centuries this city has attracted the admiration of the world. The allure and charm of Paris captivate all who visit there. Where can you discover the charm of Paris for yourseIf. Is it in the legacy of all the French rulers who worked to beautify their beloved city? Is it in the famous castles, palaces, statues and monuments? Can you it in the world-class museums, such as the Louvre? Perhaps Paris'
allure lies in the zest and style of the Parisians. When you visit Paris, you don'
t have to spend all of your time visiting museums and monuments. They are certainly worthy of your time, but ignore them for a day. First take some time to look around and experience life in Paris. You'
ll find it charming. Take a stroll along the Seine River. Browse through the art vendors colorful paintings. Peek through delicate iron gates at the well kept gardens. Watch closely for the French attention to detail that has made France synonymous with good taste. You will see it in the design of a doorway or arch and in the little fountains and quaint balconies. No matter where you look,you will find everyday objects transformed into works by art. Spend some time in a quiet park relaxing on an oid bench. Lie on your back on the green grass. When you need refreshment, try coffee and pastries at a sidewalk cafe. Strike up a conversation with a Parisian. This isn'
t always easy, though. With such a large international population living in Paris, true natives are hard to find these days. As evening comes to Paris, enchantment rises with the mist over the riverfront. You may hear music from an outdoor concert nearby classical, jazz, opera or chansons, those French folk songs. Parisians love their music. The starry sky is their auditorium. You can also hear concerts in the chateaux and cathedrals. In Paris the Music never ends. Don'
t miss the highlight of Paris evening: eating out. Parisians are proud of their cuisine. And rightly so;
it'
s world famous. Gourmet dining is one of the indispensable joys ofliving. You need a special guidebook to help you choose one of the hundreds of excellent restaurants. The capital of France boasts every regional specialty, cheese and wine the country has to offer. If you don'
t know what to order, ask for the suggested menu. The chef likes to showcase his best dishes there. Remember, you haven'
t tasted the true flavor ofF。

Youth is not a time of life;
it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees. It is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, vigour of the emotions. It is the freshness of the deep spring of life. 青春不是年华,而是心境;
青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝,而是深沉的意志、恢宏的想象、炽热的感情;

(译文2) Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60, more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows merely by the number of years;
we grow old by deserting our ideas.

年岁有加,并非垂老;

(译文2) Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. 岁月悠悠,衰微只及肌肤;

2) Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being'
s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what'
s next and the joy of the game of living. In the centre of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;
so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from menand from infinite, so long as you are young.

2) When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with the snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you'
ve grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there'
s hope you may die young at 80. 一旦天线降下,锐气便被冰雪覆盖,玩世不恭、自暴自弃油然而生,即便年方二十,实已垂垂老矣;
