Time is running out for my friend. While we are sitting at lunch she casually mentions she and her husband are thinking of starting a family. "
We'
re taking a survey,"
she says, half-joking. "
Do you think I should have a baby?"
  "
It will change your life,"
I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral2. "
I know,"
she says, "
no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous3 holidays..."
  But that'
s not what I mean at all. I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional4 wound so raw5 that she will be vulnerable6 forever. I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without thinking: "
What if that had been MY child?"
That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die. I look at her carefully manicured7 nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated8 she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive9 level of a bear protecting her cub10. I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed11 by motherhood. She might arrange for child care, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting, and she will think her baby'
s sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline12 to keep from running home, just to make sure her child is all right. I want my friend to know that every decision will no longer be routine. That a five-year-old boy'
s desire to go to the men'
s room rather than the women'
s at a restaurant will become a major dilemma. The issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester13 may be lurking14 in the lavatory15. However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess16 herself constantly17 as a mother. Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually18 she will shed the added weight19 of pregnancy20, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her own life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. She would give it up in a moment to save her offspring21, but will also begin to hope for more years—
not to accomplish her own dreams—
but to watch her children accomplish theirs. I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration22 of seeing your child learn to hit a ball. I want to capture23 for her the belly laugh24 of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real it hurts. My friend'
s look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "
You'
ll never regret it,"
I say finally. Then, squeezing25 my friend'
s hand, I offer a prayer for her and me and all of the mere mortal women who stumble26 their way into this holiest of callings.

第二篇:Words from the Heart说出心里话 Most people need to hear those "
three little words"
I love you. Once in a while, they hear them just in time. I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice1 ward, where I worked as a volunteer. Her husband, Bill, stood nervously nearby as she was transferred from the gurney2 to the hospital bed. Although Connie was in the final stages of her fight against cancer, she was alert and cheerful. We got her settled in. I finished marking her name on all the hospital supplies she would be using, then asked if she needed anything. "
Oh, yes,"
she said, "
would you please show me how to use the TV? I enjoy the soaps so much and I don'
t want to get behind on what'
s happening."
Connie was a romantic. She loved soap operas, romance novels and movies with a good love story. As we became acquainted, she confided how frustrating it was to be married 32 years to a man who often called her "
a silly woman."
  "
Oh, I know Bill loves me,"
she said, "
but he has never been one to say he loves me, or send cards to me."
She sighed and looked out the window at the trees in the courtyard. "
I'
d give anything if he'
d say ‘
I love you,'
but it'
s just not in his nature."
Bill visited Connie every day. In the beginning, he sat next to the bed while she watched the soaps. Later, when she began sleeping more, he paced up and down the hallway outside her room. Soon, when she no longer watched television and had fewer waking moments, I began spending more of my volunteer time with Bill. He talked about having worked as a carpenter and how he liked to go fishing. He and Connie had no children, but they'
d been enjoying retirement by traveling, until Connie got sick. Bill could not express his feelings about the fact that his wife was dying.   One day, over coffee in the cafeteria, I got him on the subject of women and how we need romance in our lives;
how we love to get sentimental1 cards and love letters. "
Do you tell Connie you love her?"
I asked (knowing his answer), and he looked at me as if I was crazy. "
I don'
t have to,"
he said. "
She knows I do!"
  "
I'
m sure she knows,"
I said, reaching over and touching his hands rough, carpenter'
s hands that were gripping the cup as if it were the only thing he had to hang onto "
but she needs to hear it, Bill. She needs to hear what she has meant to you all these years. Please think about it."
  We walked back to Connie'
s room. Bill disappeared inside, and I left to visit another patient. Later, I saw Bill sitting by the bed. He was holding Connie'
s hand as she slept. The date was February 12. Two days later I walked down the hospice ward at noon. There stood Bill, leaning up against the wall in the hallway, staring at the floor. I already knew from the head nurse that Connie had died at 11 A.M.. When Bill saw me, he allowed himself to come into my arms for a long time. His face was wet with tears and he was trembling. Finally, he leaned back against the wall and took a deep breath. "
I have to say something,"
he said. "
I have to say how good I feel about telling her."
He stopped to blow his nose. "
I thought a lot about what you said, and this morning I told her how much I loved her... and loved being married to her. You shoulda2 seen her smile!"
I went into the room to say my own good?bye to Connie. There, on the bedside table, was a large Valentine card from Bill. You know, the sentimental kind that says, "
To my wonderful wife... I love you."

你说的话我想了很多;

Indeed, for a living being there is no such thing as true silence, for silence itself is a revelation of the mind and the heart, an echo of the soul of a different form. Some people use silence as a disguise of the emptiness of the head. Some use it as a means to depict their disorientation and melancholy. And some use it as a way of expressing their angers and sorrows. ... Silence usually is ephemeral. It reminds one of the bronze bells dangling from a pagoda'
'
s eaves;
on windless days they are a decoration upon the age-weathered beauty, but with wind they give out wonderful tinkling and jingling metallurgic sounds, as if echoing age-old stories of long, long ago... Do you not think the same of silent people? they say that "
silence is golden"
, but of what nature is this "
gold"
? It can include integrity, honesty and kindness;
it can stand for indifference to and detachment from fame and fortune;
but it can also act as an excuse for hypocrisy, slyness and cowardice... the glittering of gold may not necessarily be the most brilliant lustre in the world. Can it be that permanent silence is only represented by death? Perhaps even death cannot represent true silence, for the carrier of the soul can turn into dust, so that the sincere and wise voices from the bottom of the heart will trigger long-lasting echoes in the seas of human hearts...

Your Guardian Angle】 Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. So one day he asked God, "
They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"

  God replied, "
Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you."

  But the child wasn'
t sure he really wanted to go. "
But tell me, here in Heaven, I don'
t do anything else but sing and smile, that'
s enough for me to be happy."

  "
Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel'
s love and be happy."
  “

  "
And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me,"
the child continued, "
If I don'
t know the language that men talk?"
  “

God patted him on the head and said, "
Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."

  "
And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"
  “
But God had an answer for that question too. "
Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."

  "
I'
ve heard that on earth there are bad men, who will protect me?"
  “
  "
Your angel will defend you even if it means risking her life!"
  “

  "
But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore,"
the child continued warily. “

God smiled on the young one. "
Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way for you to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you."

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard. The child knew he had to start on his journey very soon. He asked God one more question, softly, "
Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel'
s name."

God touched the child on the shoulder and answered, "
Your angel'
s name is not hard to remember. You will simply call her Mommy."

给女朋友买玫瑰时,记得给妈妈买一支康乃馨;
给恋人打电话时,记得给妈妈报平安;

6 Top 9 Reasons to Study Economics Economists are armed and dangerous: "
Watch out for our invisible hands."
Economists can supply it on demand . You can talk about money without ever having to make any. You get to say "
trickle down"
with a straight face . Mick Jagger and Arnold Schwarzenegger both studied economics and look how they turned out . When you are in the unemployment line, at least you will know why you are there. If you rearrange the letters in "
ECONOMICS"
, you get "
COMIC NOSE"
. Although ethics teaches that virtue is its own reward , in economics we get taught that reward is its own virtue. When you get drunk, you can tell everyone that you are just researching the law of diminishing marginal utility.

7 Nobel Prize in Economics Economics is the only field in which two people can get a Nobel Prize for saying exactly the opposite thing. Or Economics is the only field in which two people can share a Nobel Prize for saying opposing things. Specifically, Myrdal and Hayek shared one. (A rumor has it that there was a similar case in neuroscience, Golgi and Cajal, maybe economists are not so different!)

Gigantic Sale!"
and "
Super Bargains!"
The store on the left raised bigger signs proclaiming, "
Prices Slashed!"
and "
Fantastic Discounts!"
The owner in the middle then prepared a large sign that simply stated, "
ENTRANCE"

Very Pleased to Meet You During World War II, a lot of young women in Britain were in the army. Joan Phillips was one of them. She worked in a big camp, and of course met a lot of men, officers and soldiers. One evening she met Captain Humphreys at a dance. He said to her, "
I‘m going abroad tomorrow, but I‘d be very happy if we could write to each other."
Joan agreed, and they wrote for several months. Then his letters stopped, but she received one from another officer, telling her that he had been wounded and was in a certain army hospital in England. Joan went there and said to the matron, "
I‘ve e to visit Captain Humphreys."
  "
Only relatives are allowed to visit patients here,"
the matron said. "
Oh, that‘s all right,"
answered Joan. "
I‘m his sister."
  "
I‘m very pleased to meet you,"
the matron said, "
I‘m his mother!"

” Two Soldiers Two soldiers were in camp. The first one‘s name was Gee, and the second one‘s name was Bill. Gee said, "
have you got a piece of paper and an envelope, Bill?"
  Bill said, "
Yes, I have,"
and he gave them to him. Then Gee said, "
Now I haven‘t got a pen."
Bill gave him his, and Gee wrote his letter. Then he put it in the envelope and said, "
have you got a stamp, Bill?"
Bill gave him one. Then Bill got up and went to the door, so Gee said to him, "
Are you going out?"
  Bill Said, "
Yes, I am,"
and he opened the door. Gee said, "
Please put my letter in the box in the office, and..."
He stopped. "
What do you want now?"
Bill said to him. Gee looked at the envelope of his letter and answered, "
What‘s your girl-friend‘s address?"
